"Today Sheriff Cline and members of the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office were able to honor a very special group of people, elementary school teachers, by doing their lunch duty at Max Meadows Elementary School.
After spending a couple of hours with these bundles of energy who had lots of questions and opening many milk cartons and string cheeses we collectively decided we would all stay in the law enforcement profession.
Also a huge thank you to the cafeteria and custodial staff who operated seamlessly as we struggled with the string cheese packages.

Due to campus power outage, Rural Retreat High School and Rural Retreat Middle School will be closed today, Thursday, September 17, 2026. Rural Retreat Elementary school is not affected and will operate on a normal schedule.

WCPS parents and guardians, per the code of Virginia, vision and hearing screenings will be completed on all new, kindergarten, 3rd, 7th and 10th grade student unless: (a) such student was tested as part of the School Entrance Health Form (b) the parents or guardians of such student object on religious grounds and the student shows no obvious evidence of defect or disease of the eyes or ears. If you choose to waive these screenings for your student, please send a signed dated note to your school nurse.

Please pay particular attention to the form titled "Form C-WCPS Student Contacts (Parent/Guardian, Emergency Contacts) for the 2026-2027 School Year. This is a new requirement and asks that each parent/guardian and emergency contact listed have a unique phone number.

The Wythe County School Board recognized Rural Retreat High School's track State Champions at the July 9, 2026 School Board Meeting.
Trey Ward won the 200m with a time of 22.66 seconds and the 4x100m Relay team (Brody Childers, Jake Rollyson, Chaz Penwright Jr. and Trey Ward) won with a time of 43.09 seconds, setting a new school record!

As I begin my first week serving as Superintendent of Wythe County Public Schools, I want to take a moment to introduce myself and thank you for the warm welcome I have already received. It is truly an honor and a privilege to lead in a division that has played such an important role in my own professional journey.
Wythe County Public Schools has long been known for its commitment to excellence, strong relationships, and opportunities that help every student succeed. I am grateful for the experiences that helped shape me as an educator and leader, and I am excited for the opportunity to serve the students, families, staff, and community that make this division so special.
As we prepare for an exciting school year, I look forward to working alongside our outstanding teachers and staff, our supportive School Board, our dedicated families, and our valued community partners. Together, we share a common goal: ensuring every student receives a high-quality education that prepares them for success, whether their future leads them to college, military service, technical training, or the workforce.
One of the greatest strengths of Wythe County Public Schools is the partnership between our schools, families, and community. Your support, encouragement, and involvement make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students.
